Changes to Pool & Operating Hours

Given the fact that Labor Day has passed, we have begun the process of closing down the pool. This timeline is consistent with our timeline for shutting down the pool during many previous seasons.

The backyard, including the game courts, along with poolside seating will remain open throughout the fall. We look forward to seeing everyone out there!

September 15: We are closing the building at 4pm for a staff party

September 18: Start of Fall/Winter Dining Hours and we will resume dining in the Ramsey Room. Dining will be available Wednesday–Saturday for Lunch and Dinner.

Taste & Tell

New members Nikki and Karin are wine educators and own Vine Lab Wine & Spirits Academy. Every other Monday at 6:30pm beginning September 9 they will host a serious (but friendly!) tasting group for enthusiasts and professionals who are studying for wine certifications.

University Club staff and members are welcome to attend in order to learn how to professionally evaluate wine. Whether you know a little or a lot about wine, the group will help you improve your tasting skills. The group has a theme for each week and everyone who attends is required to bring a wine for that theme.

Contact karin.rockstad@vinelabwsa.com for more specific details and the theme schedule. Also see their website: vinelabwine.com for upcoming wine and spirits classes.

Reciprocal Club Spotlight

The Racquet Club of Philadelphia

Founded in 1882 and incorporated in 1889, The Racquet Club of Philadelphia continues to be one of the most prestigious private city clubs in North America. The Club started its life in a modest facility at 923 Walnut Street, but under the leadership of George D. Widener, The Racquet Club of Philadelphia’s clubhouse was designed and relocated to its current 16th street location by the famed architect, Horace Trumbauer.

The design was a simple, yet elegant five story brick-and-marble structure in the newly fashionable Georgian Revival style. Historian Nathaniel Burt described the new 1907 Clubhouse as “by far the best appointed…of all Philadelphia clubs.” The clubhouse is one of the first reinforced concrete structures designed in Philadelphia, and also includes the first above grade swimming pool, designed by the noted bridge builders, Roebling Construction Company. The building’s red-brick Georgian design is evocative of historic Philadelphia, and the Clubhouse was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.
